| WISDOM
OF THE BODY
What does your body know that
you don't? In our health and fitness-obsessed culture, we're always talking
about what's wrong with our bodies and how to fix them. In this hour of
To the Best of Our Knowledge we'll talk instead about the wisdom of
the body and the science behind mind-body medicine.
SEGMENT 1:
Jane Fonda tells Steve Paulson
that she learned to hate her body while she was still a child and developed
an eating disorder that continued for years. She says exercise helped
her begin to live in her body. Fonda's memoir is "My Life So Far."
Also, Jon Kabat-Zinn is a Professor of Medicine and the founder
of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical
school. His latest book is "Coming to Our Senses." Kabat-Zinn
talks with Steve Paulson about what it means to be mindful of the body's
functioning, like breathing.
SEGMENT 2:
Candace Pert is a Professor
of Physiology and Bio-physics at Georgetown University. Her latest project
is a CD of therapeutic words and music called "Psychosomatic Wellness."
We hears samples, and Pert tells Anne Strainchamps some of the science
behind what we hear. (You'll find more about her and her music at (www.candacepert.com).
Also, Bill Hayes is the author of "Five Quarts: A Personal
and Natural History of Blood." Hayes tells Jim Fleming several
nifty facts about the fluid that sustains us all.
SEGMENT 3:
Robert Rand was working as
a Senior Editor at NPR when he was crippled by panic attacks. He cured
himself by taking up zydeco dancing. Rand talks with Anne Strainchamps
about his unconventional cure and the music that made it possible. Rand's
book is "Dancing away an Anxious Mind."
