TO THE STARS AND BEYOND
Imagine a scenario where universes
bubble up out of black holes. Space itself can boil, and humankind may
have to fight for survival by building gigantic atom-smashers the length
of several star systems. That future may be closer than you think. In
this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, we'll walk out to the
next frontier in physics with one of its hottest young minds.
SEGMENT 1:
Physicist Michio Kaku tells
Steve Paulson that he thinks there's more and more evidence to support
the idea of the multi-verse, boiling space and projects the possibility
of humanity cloning itself into a new universe. Kaku's latest book is
"Parallel Worlds."
SEGMENT 2:
Jim Fleming interviews Brian
Greene before a live audience at Borders Booksellers in Madison,
Wisconsin. They talk about the lasting significance of Albert Einstein,
and Greene answers questions from the audience. Brian Greene was the
host of Nova's "The Elegant Universe" series and is the author
of "The Fabric of the Cosmos." You may listen to or download
the entire evening's audio as an mp3 file below.
SEGMENT 3:
Simon Singh is the author
of "Big Bang." He tells Jim Fleming that the theory is widely
accepted now, but that there are still things we don't understand. Also,
M.G. Lord is the author of "Astro Turf: The Private Life of
Rocket Science." Her father worked for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory
in Pasadena in the early days of the space program. Lord tells Anne
Strainchamps that she re-visited JPL in the 1990s to see how things
have changed.
