SURF, SEA AND SAND

Program 05-02-27-B Listen!

Since the explosion of surfing in the 60s, hanging ten has become one of the coolest sports around. Today, women, children, and seniors surf their way across peaks of blue water. Some of them even find the divine along the way. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge we'll find out how one young man in love with the ocean made the journey from beach bum to surfing rabbi. Also, life and death adventures in deep sea trawling on the angry Atlantic.

SEGMENT 1:

Drew Kampion tells Steve Paulson about some of the biggest happenings in modern surf culture. Kampion is the author of the book "Stoked: A History of Surf Culture." Also, we meet the Surfing Rabbi. Nachum Shifren tells Anne Strainchamps about the connection between surfing and mysticism.

SEGMENT 2:

Surf rock might have peaked in the 60s, but that doesn't mean its day is over. TTBOOK producer Doug Gordon investigates one of surf rock's zaniest modern acts, Los Straitjackets, to find out what's happening with their surf rock sound. Also, we set sail to the Caribbean. Ann Vanderhoof and her husband ditched their lives in Toronto to sail South. The journey changed their lives. Vanderhoof talks with Jim Fleming about her book "An Embarrassment of Mangoes."

SEGMENT 3:

Redmond O'Hanlon is travel writer who's braved the Congo, Borneo and the Amazon. This time around, he tries his luck on a trawler in the icy Atlantic in dangerous waters. Steve Paulson talks with O'Hanlon about his book, "Trawler."
