THE SIXTIES

Program 05-02-06-B Listen!

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

Many Americans think the story of Cuba begins and ends with Fidel Castro. But the soul of the Cuban Revolution belonged to the charismatic, Romantic guerilla hero Ernesto "Che" Guevara. Next time, To the Best of Our Knowledge revisits the Sixties and counts the private costs of that era's social gains. What's it like to be a Revolutionary's daughter? We'll have a novelist's answer.

SEGMENT 1:

We hear audio from TV news of the 1960's. Then, Mark Kurlansky, author of "1968: The Year That Rocked the World" tells Steve Paulson why that year was so significant. And we hear lots of sound from 1968, from the Democratic National Convention in Chicago to Vietnam and Paris. Also, we hear from some contemporary college students what they think of the sixties.

SEGMENT 2:

Joelle Fraser wrote a memoir called "The Territory of Men." She tells Jim Fleming about her parents who did their best, despite pre-Women's Lib conditioning and alcoholism. Also, novelist Ana Menendez tells Steve Paulson about her book "Loving Che." She reads a passage and they discuss the real Che Guevara and his impact on Latin America. And we hear a song in homage to Che.

SEGMENT 3:

More thoughts about the sixties from contemporary college students. And, historian Jeremi Suri gives Anne Strainchamps a new take on the sixties. In his book "Power and Protest: Global Revolution and the Rise of Detente" Suri says national leaders began to cooperate with each other because none of them could communicate with the youth at home.
