COLLECTING
Newspaper tycoon William Randolph
Hearst was extremely afraid of death. So much so that when one of the
palm trees at his San Simeon estate died unexpectedly, the gardeners painted
its leaves green until it could be replaced while Hearst was away. In
this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, we'll find out more
about people like Hearst who try to cheat death by amassing extensive
collections.
SEGMENT 1:
Brett Milano is the author
of "Vinyl Junkies: Adventures in Record Collecting." He talks
with Steve Paulson about why some people are obsessed with vinyl recordings,
and we hear samples. Also, celebrated children's author Maurice Sendak
talks with Steve Paulson about one of his collections.
SEGMENT 2:
Philipp Blom is the author
of "To Have and To Hold: An Intimate History of Collectors and
Collecting." He tells Anne Strainchamps about some of history's
great pack-rats, and what purposes their collections served. Also, we
hear sound from Theatre Cryptic's production of "Tunnel Visions"
- based on the lives of the Collyer Brothers. And, Franz Lidz
is the author of "Ghosty Men: The Strange but True Story of the
Collyer Brothers, New York's Greatest Hoarders." Lidz tells Jim
Fleming about the brothers who lived in New York in the early 1900s.
They completely filled a mansion in Harlem with everything from newspapers
to nine pianos. And Lidz comments on the hoarding habit of his own Uncle
Arthur.
SEGMENT 3:
Steve Nieve is best known
as keyboard player for Elvis Costello's backing band, The Attractions.
Doug Gordon found him Chicago and talked with him about his music
and his collection of sounds. And we hear lots of music.
