THE FOURTH ESTATE
To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio
Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh made his name
when he broke the story of the My Lai Massacre. Looking back you
have to wonder: why did Lt. William Calley tell Hersh he'd killed
hundreds of Vietnamese civilians? In this hour of To the Best
of Our Knowledge Hersh says "because I asked him."
SEGMENT 1:
Seymour Hersh broke the My Lai massacre story
during the Vietnam War and he was among the first to document
the extent of the abuses and the cover-up at the Abu Ghraib prison
in Iraq. Hersh tells Steve Paulson how he got those stories and
how he functions as an investigative reporter and outsider. Hersh
is the author of "Chain of Command: The Road from 9/11 to
Abu Ghraib." Also, columnist Maureen Dowd tells Jim
Fleming that a lot of people still don't understand that a columnist
is supposed to have a point of view. She writes for the New York
Times Op-Ed page and her columns have been collected in a book
called "Bushworld."
SEGMENT 2:
 |
Jennifer Cohen flew off to Russia
to be a journalist and live with the man of her dreams. Things
didn't quite work out the way she planned. She tells the whole
story in a memoir called "Lying Together." Here,
she tells Anne Strainchamps what it was like living in Russia
in the late 90s, and what happened when she realized her boyfriend
was an alcoholic who was still drinking. |
|
SEGMENT 3:
| Bill Moyers has won 9 Peabody
Awards and 30 Emmys, and now hosts a show on PBS. He's also
put together a collection of essays called "Moyers on
America." His particular niche is exploring big ideas
on television, as he did in his memorable series with myth-maker
Joseph Campbell. Here, Moyers talks with Steve Paulson about
covering the world of ideas and how to make it compelling
television. |
