To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

"Never play cards with a man called Doc. Never eat at a place called Mum's. And never go to bed with a woman whose troubles are greater than your own." -- Nelson Algren.
In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, we'll catch up with Studs Terkel to talk about why an American master like Nelson Algren never got his due.

SEGMENT 1:

Studs Terkel tells Steve Paulson about his friend Nelson Algren. Algren wrote "A Walk on the Wild Side" and won the first National Book Award for "The Man with the Golden Arm," but was too gritty for most critics. Terkel's latest book is "Hope Dies Last." We also hear Algren reading from "Chicago: City on the Make." Also, journalist Marc Cooper is the author of "The Last Honest Place in America: Paradise and Perdition in Las Vegas." He tells Jim Fleming that Las Vegas has its own integrity in that all that matters there is money and the city is completely honest about that.

SEGMENT 2:

Independent producer Angie Blake presents her radio documentary on a group of gay men who have been outsiders from both gay and straight culture since the 1950's – the leather men.

SEGMENT 3:

Noah Levine is the author of a memoir called "Dharma Punx." He tells Anne Strainchamps how he's combined the spiritual traditions of Buddhism with punk rock in his own life and says his message seems to resonate with other people his age. Also, Steve Paulson talks with Diamanda Galas about her two new CD's - "La Serpenta Canta" and "Defixiones: Will and Testament." Galas is a classically trained pianist, with a vocal range of three and a half octaves whose music is dark and intense. And we hear lots of it.
