FAT OR FICTION

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

By today's medical definition, Brad Pitt is overweight, and Russell Crowe is obese. The standards are even tougher for women. But are those extra pounds really that bad? Maybe it's time we all lighten up about fat. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, why one expert says America's war on weight is fraught with misinformation, hysteria, and hypocrisy. Also, being fat and fabulous: a fat girls' guide to life.

SEGMENT 1:

Morgan Spurlock won "Best Director" at Sundance for his documentary "Super Size Me." We hear a clip from the film, and Spurlock talks to Jim Fleming about his experience of eating three meals a day at McDonald's for a month. Also, film-maker Soso Whaley tried the same experiment, but with vastly different results. She tells Jim what was different about her choices that caused her to lose ten pounds and lower her cholesterol.

SEGMENT 2:

Paul Campos is the author of "The Obesity Myth: Why America's Obsession with Weight Is Hazardous to Your Health." He tells Steve Paulson that much of the evidence cited by the diet industry is junk science and that our society is heavily invested in maintaining un-realistic ideals of physical perfection. Wendy Shanker is the author of "The Fat Girl's Guide to Life." She tells Anne Strainchamps that she prefers "fat" to the euphemisms and says that she is healthy and happy despite her size.

SEGMENT 3:

Manny Yarborough is 6'7" tall, weighs over 700 pounds, and is a former amateur world champion sumo wrestler. He tells Steve Paulson about Sumo culture in Japan and says Sumo wrestlers are as limber as ballet dancers. He acknowledges that 700 pounds is too much and says he will take weight off by exercising first in the water. But, he says, Sumos put on good fat, not bad fat.
