| NATURE'S
WONDERS
To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio
Dave Soldier has an unusual hobby. He teaches elephants
to play music instruments...in an elephant orchestra. Ben Kilham
does something else that's unique. He raises orphan bear cubs and
then releases them into the wild. In this hour of To the Best
of Our Knowledge, some remarkable stories about animals, people
and the natural world.
SEGMENT 1:
Richard Ranft is the curator of the wildlife
section of the British Library National Sound Archive. He's collected
underwater sounds of mating haddock, snapping shrimp, walruses
and other sea creatures. We'll hear these amazing sounds during
Ranft's conversation with Jim Fleming. Also, what's it like to
grow up with a great naturalist? Well, it made quite an impression
on the children of famed conservationist Aldo Leopold, author
of the nature-writing classic "A Sand County Almanac."
Steve Paulson talks with three of Leopold's children - Carl
and Estella Leopold and Nina Leopold Bradley. We'll also hear
an excerpt from "A Sand County Almanac."
SEGMENT 2:
Dave Soldier is a neurologist with an unusual
hobby. He teaches elephants to play musical instruments. Anne
Strainchamps talks with Soldier about his Thai Elephant Orchestra.
And we'll hear samples of the elephants' music. Also, Laure-Anne
Bosselaar talks with Jim Fleming about finding nature in the
city. Bosselaar reads several poems from the poetry anthology
she edited, "Urban Nature."
SEGMENT 3:
Ben Kilham does something utterly unique.
He raises orphan bear cubs and then releases them into the wild.
Kilham is the author of the book "Among the Bears."
Steve Paulson visits Kilham at his home in New Hampshire, and
they trek into the woods to meet one of these grown bears and
her two cubs.
