To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

Phil Harvey gives away tens of millions of dollars every year to fight AIDS and promote family planning in such places as India, Brazil, Vietnam and Ethiopia. Where does the money come from? Harvey runs the largest mail-order erotica business in the world. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, the man dubbed "the hard-core philanthropist." Also, a female anthropologist who became a stripper to understand male fantasies.

SEGMENT 1:

In 1999 writer Leif Ueland was invited to ride the Playboy bus as it cris-crossed America in search of "Miss Millennium." He tells Anne Strainchamps what it was like for the son of feminists to make such a journey. His book is "Accidental Playboy: Caught in the Ultimate Male Fantasy." Also, Philip Harvey is the owner of Adam & Eve, the world's largest adult-only mail order business. He's also founder and executive director of DKT International, an international family planning organization. Harvey tells Jim Fleming about using the profits from his porn business to underwrite his philanthropy. And, a brief dramatized snippet from Olivia Judson and her book "Dr. Tatiana's Sex Advice to All Creation."

SEGMENT 2:

Katherine Frank is an anthropologist who worked in a strip club to gather material for her book "G-Strings and Sympathy: Strip Club Regulars and Male Desire." Frank tells Steve Paulson who goes to strip clubs and what they're looking for. We also hear readings from her interviews with patrons. And more advice from Dr. Tatiana.

SEGMENT 3:

We hear a bit of James Joyce's Molly Bloom to remind us of a woman's take on sexual desire, then meet Jane Juska. She's a retired high school English teacher who tells Anne Strainchamps why, at the age of 66, she took out an ad in the NY Review of Books looking for as many sexual partners as possible. She tells her story in a book called "A Round-Heeled Woman." And a final bit of advice from Dr. Tatiana.
