STORYTELLING

Program 03-09-28-B Listen!

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

Ira Glass has helped reinvent storytelling on the radio. But he says it took him years to learn how to tell a good radio tale. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, Ira Glass ont he art of telling stories. We'll also visit The Moth – the mecca of storytelling in New York City. And why lots of people no longer read adult novels. They say kids' books have better stories.

SEGMENT 1:

Amanda Craig is a British children's novelist. Her books include "In a Dark Wood" and "Love in Idleness." She tells Anne Strainchamps that children's literature has a strong sense of story and that's why it appeals to adults. We also hear Phillip Pullman reading an excerpt from "The Golden Compass," the opening volume of the "His Dark Materials" trilogy. Also, independent producer Matt Lieber takes us to visit The Moth, a collective in New York City that explores storytelling as an urban art form.

SEGMENT 2:

Ira Glass is the host of the public radio program "This American Life." He tells Steve Paulson what makes a story work on the radio and plays several examples. Also, we hear a diary entry by David Sedaris, originally produced by Ira for NPR's Morning Edition.

SEGMENT 3:

Saira Shah's father is Afghan, but she grew up in England. She became a journalist and went to Afghanistan to cover the mujahadin's war against the Soviets. She later made an acclaimed documentary about the Taliban called "Under the Veil." Now she's written a memoir called "The Storyteller's Daughter." Shah tells Jim Fleming how her father used stories to give her a sense of her ethnic cultural birthright and how those stories helped her when she worked in Afghanistan.
