To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

The world's oceans are emptying at an alarming rate. Fish populations are dwindling and dozens of species are going extinct. Is this something to worry about? Not as long as you like plankton stew. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, we'll meet the controversial scientist who jump-started a world-wide "Save the Fish" movement. And, what to cook when salmon's endangered. Linguine and seaweed, anyone?

SEGMENT 1:

Daniel Pauly is a fisheries scientist at the University of British Columbia, and the author of "In a Perfect Ocean." He tells Steve Paulson that technological changes in the modern fishery are wiping out vast populations of fish. He says only "no fish" zones will prevent fish from becoming extinct. Also, Jill Gusman is a chef and the author of "Vegetables from the Sea: Everyday Cooking with Sea Greens." She gives Anne Strainchamps some of her favorite seaweed recipes.

SEGMENT 2:

Peter Klimley is the world's leading expert on Hammerhead and Great White sharks. He tells Jim Fleming what Hollywood got wrong in "Jaws;" describes the mechanics of a shark attack, and says shark populations are declining. Klimley's new book is "The Secret Life of Sharks." Also, Jim Cummings runs Earth Ear, an on-line catalogue of environmental sound-scapes. He plays some of his favorites for Anne Strainchamps and they talk about the new field of acoustic ecology. You can listen to samples on their website: http://www.earthear.com/

SEGMENT 3:

Anthony Doerr wrote a stunning book of short stories, "The Shell Collector." The book's out now in paper. Doerr talks with Anne Strainchamps and we hear readings from the title story. The Shell Collector is a blind man who "sees" his shells through his sense of touch.
