GAME SHOW
To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio
Say you're in Vegas playing high-stakes poker. You
haven't slept in days. To make matters worse, you're being stared
down by two of the best poker players in the world. And...you're
bluffing. So, you bet it all to bring the pot to well over a million
dollars. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, we'll
talk to Jim McManus about that fateful hand, the World Series of
Poker, and the meaning of luck.
SEGMENT 1:
James McManus writes for Harpers. With an
advance from the magazine, he entered the world series of poker.
McManus tells Steve Paulson about playing with professionals and
muses on the balance of luck and skill required for tournament
play. McManus expanded his article into a book called "Positively
Fifth Street: Murderers, Cheetahs, and Binion's World Series of
Poker." And, Doug Gordon hosts a game for listeners.
SEGMENT 2:
Dave Perry is the game developer who worked
with the Wachowski brothers to create the videogame for "The
Matrix Reloaded." Perry tells Jim Fleming why this game is
unique: the film-makers wrote an original script for the game
and shot additional footage with the film's actors specifically
for the game. The movie and game will be released next week, but
they already have orders for 4 million units. And, Jerome Charyn
remembers the glory days of ping-pong in America. He tells Steve
Paulson about some of the great matches of the past and reflects
on the worldwide popularity of the game. His book is "Sizzling
Chops and Devilish Spins: Ping Pong and the Art of Staying Alive."
And, more from Doug Gordon and his game.
SEGMENT 3:
Luke Rhinehart published a novel in the 70s
that became a cult classic. "The Dice Man" involves
a psychiatrist who opens his life to new possibilities by basing
his actions on a throw of the diced. Rhinehart talks with Anne
Strainchamps about the dicing life. Rhinehart's also the author
of "The Book of the Die." And we get the conclusion
of Doug Gordon's new game.
