DECIDING WHO YOU ARE
To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio
In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge,
some of the most critical questions you'll ever face. Who are you?
What does your life mean? And how did you decide who you wanted
to be? We'll hear from Rabbi Harold Kushner, Senator John McCain
and novelist Tim O'Brien. We'll talk about making moral choices
in perilous times. And reflect on how these choices affect you for
the rest of your life.
SEGMENT 1:
Novelist Tim O'Brien talks with Jim Fleming
about the life-long consequences of the decisions the Viet Nam
generation made in their twenties, and says it's harder to effectively
protest today. Also, Rabbi Harold Kushner tells Anne Strainchamps
that people need to believe their lives are meaningful and that
we can make a significant contribution by our everyday actions.
SEGMENT 2:
Lynn Peril is the author of "Pink Think:
Becoming a Woman in Many Uneasy Lessons." She tells Steve
Paulson that an idealized feminine identity was marketed to women
to get them to buy all sorts of things, from beauty products to
toys. Peril collects "Pink Think" memorabilia, and we
hear several examples. Also, Ana Castillo is the author
of "Peel My Love Like an Onion." She talks with Jim
Fleming about her own Mexican-American heritage and how she uses
it in her novel about a flamenco dancer with polio.
SEGMENT 3:
Senator John McCain says being respected
is more important than being liked in Washington. He talks about
his role models with Steve Paulson. McCain admires noble failures
from Teddy Roosevelt to Billy Mitchell and Emilio Zapata. He talks
about their importance in his life in the book, "Worth the
Fighting For" written with Mark Salter.
