TIME AFTER TIME

Program 03-02-23-B Listen!

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

The collapse of the twin towers gave birth to a strange new world. It was a city of fire and dust, rubble crunching under foot and eerie underground rivers. William Langewiesche was the only journalist with unrestricted access to Ground Zero. What he found there was startling, natural, and uniquely American. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge lessons learned from what remains. And, the romance of ruins.

SEGMENT 1:

William Langwiesche writes for the Atlantic Monthly. His new book is "American Ground: Unbuilding the World Trade Center." He tells Anne Strainchamps about the underground rivers at Ground Zero and the extraordinary courage and leadership shown by all the volunteers who participated in the clean up, even as the firemen rejected the heroic language used in the media. Also, Christopher Woodward talks with Steve Paulson about the English mania for ruins and why they inspired the Romantic poets. Woodward's book is "In Ruins."

SEGMENT 2:

Mick Aston is an archeologist and the co-creator of the British television show "Time Team." Aston and a crew of archeologists and scientists descend on a site and see what they can come up with in three days. Aston talks with Jim Fleming about the show and its discoveries and we hear clips from the show. For more information about "Time Team," with their website at http://www.channel4.com/history/timeteam/. Also, British journalist Jay Griffiths talks with Jim Fleming about the ways different cultures around the world think about time. Her book is "A Sideways Look at Time."

SEGMENT 3:

Music historian Will Friedwald talks with Steve Paulson about "As Time Goes By" and why we love it. He describes its use in "Casablanca" and the various ways it's been sung since. And of course, we hear examples.
