Program 02-12-15-A Listen!

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

Jane Scott keeps strange company. While other women her age spend their time in knitting circles, Scott's still hanging out with rockers like Lou Reed and Alice Cooper (and showing off her backstage pass.) It's her job. Or at least it was until she retired as rock critic for the Cleveland Plain Dealer a month before her 83rd birthday. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge the music fan - from rock journalism to the Church of St. John Coltrane.

SEGMENT 1:

Daniel Cavicchi spent three years talking to his fellow Bruce Springsteen fans. The result is a book called "Tramps Like Us: Music and Meaning among Springsteen Fans." Cavicchi talks with Jim Fleming about The Boss and his fans. And we hear lots of Springsteen music, including a track from the new album, "The Rising."

SEGMENT 2:

Jane Scott, recently retired as the rock critic of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, tells Steve Paulson about meeting Jimi Hendrix and Paul McCartney, and not meeting Elvis. Also, Rufus Wainright, son of folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, talks about his father's song "One-Man Guy" which he covers on his album, "Poses."

SEGMENT 3:

Singer/songwriter Lisa Germano played violin for rock artist John Mellencamp. Her own album, "Geek the Girl" contains a song, "The Psychopath," based on her experiences with an obsessed fan. She talks with Anne Strainchamps about the song, and the experience. Also,
Steve Paulson talks with Bishop King, founder of the Church of St. John Coltrane, and with Ashley Kahn, author of "A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane's Signature Album." We hear about the composition and album and why Coltrane's music, especially this piece, inspires a spiritual response in listeners.
