If you want to know the truth about J.D. Salinger, good luck. To this day we know more about his fictional character Holden Caulfield than we do about the man who created him. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, literary life after Salinger's masterpiece. Also, the Salinger legacy in American culture, from the movie "Igby Goes Down" to the assassination of John Lennon. Also, writer Charles Baxter takes on childhood.

 

SEGMENT 1:

Editor Chris Kubica talks about his project, "Letters to JD Salinger." Since Salinger has withdrawn from public life, Kubica asked dozens of authors to sound off to Salinger by writing him letters - even if Salinger will never read them. Also, John Wenke traces the cultural influence of "The Catcher in the Rye" on American culture from film to high profile crime. Wenke teaches at Salisbury University.

SEGMENT 2:

Writer Charles Baxter understand the inner world of teenagers. He shares a tale of teen angst from his upcoming novel, "Saul and Patsy."

SEGMENT 3:

Margaret Salinger talks about her childhood in the woods of New Hampshire with her father, JD Salinger. She tells Anne Strainchamps that the author of "The Catcher in the Rye" might write with empathy about children, but he made a cold, distant father. And, host of A Prairie Home Companion, Garrison Keillor, recalls his coming of age in the novel, "Lake Woebegon: Summer of 1956." Steve Paulson speaks with him.
