ART AND POLITICS

Program 02-09-29-A

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

Vaclav Havel is President of the Czech Republic, but for many  around the world, he’s known as the poet in blue jeans, the  dissident playwright who inspired a Velvet Revolution. Next time on To the Best of Our Knowledge,  President Havel talks art and politics.  And, we’ll go back to when  the Twin Towers stood tall and an artist walked a high wire between  them. That’s, To the Best of Our Knowledge, from PRI,  Public Radio International.

SEGMENT 1:

Vaclev Havel is President of the Czech Republic. A poet and playwright, he is regarded as the hero of the Velvet Revolution which ended Communist rule in Czechoslovakia. President Havel talks with Steve Paulson about the role of the artist in politics. And we hear an excerpt from Havel's play "The Memorandum."

SEGMENT 2:

TIME magazine reporter Josh Tyrangiel talks with Anne Strainchamps about Bono's long-term commitment to providing assistance to Africa. He accompanied the U2 star on his recent African tour with U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill. Also, writer and journalist Christopher Hitchens has a new book called "Why Orwell Matters." Hitchens tells Steve Paulson that Orwell got it right about imperialism, fascism and communism. He opposed all of them at a time when most intellectuals ignored the contradictions of the Left.

SEGMENT 3:

Philippe Petit is the author of "To Reach the Clouds: My High Wire Walk between the Twin Towers." He tells Jim Fleming that he spent years planning his illegal 1974 performance at the World Trade Center; remembers the event; and talks about what the destruction of the Towers meant for him.
