CALL OF THE WILD

Program 02-09-29-B Listen!

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

Ben Kilham has some unusual playmates - black balls of fur who scratch, wrestle and climb all over him.  They are orphaned bear cubs.  And Kilham is their surrogate mom.  He’s raised two dozen bear cubs and then released them into the wild.  Next time on To the Best of Our Knowledge, we’ll trek into the New Hampshire woods with Ben Kilham...in search of a mother bear and her cubs.

SEGMENT 1:

Benjamin Kilham is a naturalist who lives in the woodlands of New Hampshire. He studies and rehabilitates wild black bears. Steve Paulson spent a day with him as he visited a mother bear and two cubs that he's keeping an eye on. Kilham is the author (with Ed Gray) of "Among the Bears: Raising Orphan Cubs in the Wild." (Picture is of Kilham next to one of his cages. The bear cubs live here before they're turned loose int he woods. Photo by Steve Paulson)

SEGMENT 2:

Scott Weidensaul is the author of several books on the natural world. His new one is "The Ghost with Trembling Wings: Science, Wishful Thinking, and the Search for Lost Species." He talks with Jim Fleming about several animals that have turned up after their species was thought to be extinct. And he describes some of the efforts going on to document such lost species.

SEGMENT 3:

Biologist Renee Askins tells Anne Strainchamps why she is passionate about wolves, and why she was determined to re-introduce wolves to Yellowstone National Park. Her book is called "Shadow Mountain: A Memoir of Wolves, a Woman and the Wild." Also, Ian Frazier talks with Jim Fleming about fishing. He says New York's rivers and harbor are full of great fish, and recalls some of his angling adventures both there and abroad. Frazier's latest book is "The Fish's Eye: Essays about Angling and the Outdoors."
