To tell the Truth?

Program 01-10-21-B

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio
Winston Churchill once said "In wartime, truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies." In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, journalist Jake Tapper discusses the ethics of telling lies during wartime. We'll also take a concise look at the history of lying. And, the truth about lying experiments.

SEGMENT 1:
Jake Tapper is the Washington correspondent for Salon.com. He tells Anne Strainchamps about the importance of lies during wartime and gives several examples of strategic deceptions. Also, Evelin Sullivan, author of "The Concise Book of Lying," talks with Steve Paulson about lies of necessity, little white lies, and what sort of deception really makes people angry.
SEGMENT 2:
Brad Blanton is the author of "Practicing Radical Honesty: How to Complete the Past, Live in the Present, and Build a Future with a Little Help from Your Friends." He tells Anne Strainchamps that speaking your mind, even when it's rude, will result in deeper, more satisfying relationships. Also in this segment, Paul Ekman is a professor of psychology at the University of California, San Francisco, and author of "Telling Lies: Clues to Deceit in the Marketplace, Politics and Marriage." He tells Jim Fleming about different kinds of lies, and the physical signs that signal deceit.
SEGMENT 3:
Jeremy Campbell's book is called "The Liar's Tale: A History of Falsehood." He tells Steve Paulson about the ways Mother Nature uses deception to fool predators, and talks about Bill Clinton and the balance of the public good and personal morality.
