Wheel Life

Program 01-04-29-A

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio
Think only George Jetson drives a flying car? Paul Moller is designing a real one, right now! No more worries about morning gridlock – you'll be soaring high in the sky. But imagine a fender bender a thousand feet up – Yikes! In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, the skycar – will it ever take flight? Also, under the hood of the new hybrid-electric cars. And, a Chicago messenger's adventures in the concrete jungle.

SEGMENT 1:
Matt Wald covers transportation issues for the New York Times. He talks with Jim Fleming about the new hybrid electric cars being marketed by Honda and Toyota. Also, Paul Moller is an automotive engineer and the inventor of the Skycar. He tells Anne Strainchamps why he thinks we'll all be flying to work someday, and our vehicles will be smart enough to avoid collisions.
SEGMENT 2:
Chicago bike messenger Travis Hugh Culley is the author of "The Immortal Class: Bike Messengers and the Cult of Human Power." He tells Steve Paulson what life is like for a courier in the concrete canyons, and how his work has become both a way of life and a philosophy.
SEGMENT 3:
Film critic Jack Sargeant (with Stephanie Watson) edited "Lost Highways: An Illustrated History of Road Movies." He tells Steve Paulson that the road movie has its roots in the mythology of the cowboy, and has become a genre of its own. Also, travel journalist Christopher Baker made a motorcycle journey around the island of Cuba. He tells Jim Fleming that Cuba is sensual and surreal, and very much in the shadow of Fidel Castro.
