Victims of domestic abuse and other violent crimes would be able to keep their home addresses secret under a bill that passed the state Senate Tuesday.

The plan would have the Wisconsin Department of Justice set up placeholder addresses for crime victims. Mail sent there would then get forwarded to victims’ actual addresses. Senate Democratic Minority Leader Jennifer Shilling said the idea is to help people go about their regular lives without fearing for their safety.

“It just adds security and safety to those women who have escaped domestic violence situations, stalking, sex trafficking. This will lead to a sense of safety and normalcy in their lives,” said Shilling.
