Working Title: Talk Producer - Milwaukee
Official Title: Associate Broadcasting Specialist
Unit: Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR),
University of Wisconsin-Extension
Appointment: Academic Staff 75%, 12 mo project appointment
Location: Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Availability: Immediate/ Open until filled.

POSITION SUMMARY
Produce current issue call-in radio programs. Serve as on-air producer for talk programs. Also, insert talk show content on WPR Web site. Assist with production of other programs as needed.

SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Keep current on issues of importance and interest to listeners and attend scheduled editorial meetings to suggest call-in topics and guests.
  • Locate, pre-interview and schedule appropriate guests to provide balance (political, gender, etc) and a variety of perspectives for call-in programming in consultation with program host and Talk Programming Director.
  • Provide program host with background material, suggested introductions and questions.
  • Prepare and distribute program note sheets for each hour.
  • Create and update website content and features for Ideas Network.
  • Create, organize and maintain program information files, rolodex and resource information.
  • Write, record, edit, and distribute on-air promos each day.
  • When appropriate, write and distribute press releases for the program.
  • Serve as on-air producer, including screening listener phone calls for call-in programming.
  • Fill in for other on-air staff and producing staff as assigned.
  • Participate in promotional appearances and on-air fundraisers.
  • Work productively and successfully with diverse, multicultural people and groups.
  • Demonstrate respect for others in all workplace relationships and interactions.
  • Other duties as assigned by Talk Programming Director.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Produce talk programs for Wisconsin Public Radio’s Ideas Network.
  • Prepare host with background material and audio clips.
  • On-air produce assigned programs.
  • Update web and social media sites on a daily basis.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Bachelor’s degree and professional experience producing live call-in programming.
  2. Interest in news and current affairs.
  3. Demonstrated ability to generate program ideas.
  4. Strong skills in locating, pre-interviewing and scheduling guests.
  5. Must have proven organizational, research and communication skills.
  6. Demonstrated ability to produce consistent quality work under rigorous deadline pressure.
  7. Experience creating or managing web and/or social media sites.
  8. Ability to work well independently but also enjoy collaboration.
  9. Audio editing experience (Adobe Audition, Sound Forge, etc..).
  10. Demonstrated ability to collaborate productively, in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift quickly.
  11. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multi-cultural audiences and individuals.
  12. Demonstrated ability to operate radio production equipment including control board, ISDN telephone system, and Audio Vault (or similar) production system.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of journalistic ethics.
  • Previous public radio experience, with 2 yr. FTE talk show production strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with public radio talk shows and Wisconsin is a plus.
SALARY: The minimum for this position is 75% of $30,853. UW-Extension offers a comprehensive fringe benefits package, including health insurance, sick leave and vacation.

SCHEDULE: This position is Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m. until 3:30.
