Working Title: Music Programming Director
Official Title: Administrative Program Manager III
Unit: Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR),

Appointment: Academic Staff 100% fixed term
Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Availability: Immediate/ Open until filled.

POSITION SUMMARY
Manage all aspects of music programming for NPR News & Classical Music Network of Wisconsin Public Radio and the WPR Classical HD radio network.

SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Serve as primary supervisor for music related staffing, including music hosts, librarian, programmers and producers, with coordination and oversight of regional music programming.
  2. Serve as member of program management team.
  3. Lead web-based initiatives for music programming.
  4. Serve on WPR Program Planning Team. Select music specials and recommend program or schedule changes.
  5. Program and host Classical Music programming
  6. Oversee all locally produced special music programs including but not limited to Sunday Afternoon Live, the Neale-Silva Young Artist’s competition and Music from Wisconsin. Co-produce live concerts as needed.
  7. Conduct regular airchecks and supervise on-air continuity. Oversee on-air promotion for all music programming. Work closely with the Traffic Manager and Marketing Director and Regional Managers.
  8. Assist in establishing and overseeing guidelines for music selection, making use of research data, input from staff and other available information.
  9. Take an active part in acquisition of new recordings and syndicated programs for broadcast. Serve as principal contact with record companies and other programming sources.
  10. Participate in on-air fund raising and other special promotional events.
  11. Develop and implement ideas for special outreach projects, as well as continuing on-and off-air promotional activities for WPR’s music Department.
  12. Schedule part-time and vacation replacement announcers.
  13. Responsible and accountable for affirmative action/Plan 2008 efforts including employment, promotion and training.
  14. Respond to listener queries and comments.
  15. Demonstrate respect for others in all workplace relationships and interactions.
  16. Other duties as assigned by supervisors.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Aural acuity to discern and correct variations in broadcast quality
  • Ability to operate broadcast board
  • Voice quality that is compelling and that meets state-wide network broadcasting standards
  • Skill, comfort and demeanor to effectively and productively manage diverse music staff and music genres
  • Ability to work non-standard hours during events, pledge drives and so forth
QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Bachelor's degree required.
  2. Minimum five to seven years' managerial experience
  3. Significant music programming and announcing experience
  4. Superior oral and written communication skill
  5. Ability to work productively and successfully with diverse, multicultural people and groups.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience leading music programming in a state-wide network or a large market or with a large staff
  • Demonstrated understanding of opportunities and challenges for classical music on the World Wide Web and other distribution platforms
SALARY: The range for this position is $53,249 to $67,000. Actual pay will be dependent upon qualifications and experience and WPR expects to pay in the middle of this range.  UW-Extension offers a comprehensive benefits package.
