Working Title: All Things Considered Host/Reporter
Official Title: Intermediate or Senior Broadcasting Specialist

Appointment: Academic Staff 100% fixed term
Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Availability: Immediate/ Open until filled.

POSITION SUMMARY
ATC Host executes live on air presentation of afternoon statewide newscasts, weather breaks and promotions, in a precisely timed format. Will prepare news reports and conduct live interviews when warranted as well as cover stories of statewide interest.

SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Produce and announce hourly afternoon newscasts during All Things Considered. Also, announce program promotions, weather forecasts, and other continuity as needed.
  2. Participate in daily news program planning meetings, contributing ideas for issue-oriented, analytical interviews or reports.
  3. Produce news reports and interviews as assigned, for play on statewide network. Set up live or prerecorded interviews as assigned. (Includes researching topic, scheduling guests, and conducting issue oriented on-air interviews.)
  4. Participate in on-air fundraising and public appearances/promotional events as requested. Participate in news division, and statewide meetings.
  5. Operate control board and field reporting equipment.
  6. Evaluate office/studio equipment needs. Reports electronics problems top proper staff.
  7. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  8. Demonstrates respect for others in all workplace relationships and interactions.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Produce and host local segments and newscasts for Wisconsin Public Radio’s All Things Considered and Marketplace.
  • Voice quality/sound and pronunciation at or above the state-wide network minimum
  • Prepare source material for newscasts, using WPR reporter pieces, wire service reports, rewritten as needed.
  • Speak, read copy and write in on-air conversational broadcast style
  • Gather and prepare other program elements such as program promos and upcoming segment sound bites
  • May occasionally work in the evenings for broadcast specials (WPR or network-produced)
QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Bachelor’s degree and professional experience as a reporter or news program producer.
  2. At least two years experience as a radio newsmagazine newscaster or host.
  3. Strong skills in quickly writing or rewriting news copy, and sound editing.
  4. Demonstrated ability to produce in-depth radio news features.
  5. Must have proven organizational, research and communication skills
  6. Demonstrated ability to produce consistent quality work under rigorous deadline pressure.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate radio production equipment including control board, ISDN telephone system, and Audio Vault (or similar) production system.
  8. Experience and ability to work with diverse, multicultural people and groups.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of journalistic ethics
  • Familiarity with public radio news shows and Wisconsin is a plus.
  • Experience as an on-air public radio fundraiser.
SALARY: The range for this position is $36,000 – 60,000. Actual pay will be dependent upon qualifications and experience; WPR expects to hire within the middle of the range. UW-Extension offers a comprehensive benefits package.
