POSITION SUMMARY
A member of the WHA Radio Engineering Department, providing a full range of technical services in support of WPR activities. Install, support, service, maintain, repair, and build broadcast equipment with special emphasis on computer-based broadcast automation systems. Reports to the Director of Engineering and Operations.

SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Computer-based Broadcast and Production Systems
  1. Plan, specify, purchase, assemble, manage and maintain broadcast computers and networks.
  2. Oversee use of computers in production and broadcast facilities statewide.
  3. Assure reliability of computer-based radio production and broadcast systems.
  4. Maintain effective security on broadcast computers and networks.
B. General Broadcast Equipment and Systems
  1. Participate in the planning and development of new systems.
  2. Purchase necessary equipment, parts, and supplies.
  3. Assemble, install, and configure equipment.
  4. Perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
  5. Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve problems in broadcast systems.
  6. Travel to WPR facilities as necessary to support systems and equipment.
  7. Cross-train with other engineers and provide back-up/fill-in capability.
  8. Provide after-hours support of systems and equipment.
C. Maintain High Technical Standards
  1. Perform work to professional standards of safety, reliability, and appearance.
  2. Develop and perform tests to evaluate performance of broadcast systems.
  3. Suggest changes in equipment or procedures for higher quality or efficiency.
  4. Insure operations are in compliance with FCC, FAA, EPA, OSHA, and other regulations.
  5. Inform Director of Engineering and Operations of any difficulties encountered.
D. Technical Liaison
  1. Communicate effectively with all personnel and departments.
  2. Develop specifications to be met and provide feedback on results.
  3. Train and support users of equipment and systems.
  4. Perform quality control processes.
E. Documentation
  1. Document systems, configuration, wiring, procedures, and techniques.
  2. Maintain inventories of equipment, parts, supplies.
  3. Secure approvals for purchases, document buys as per UW-Extension rules.
F. Other Duties as assigned by Supervisor
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve problems.
  • Plan, install, and maintain WPR’s computer automation systems.
  • Use IT and networking skills to maintain complex broadcast computers and networks.
  • Provide an effective liaison between Programming, Operations, Traffic, and Engineering.
  • Travel to various WPR facilities as needed to install and maintain broadcast equipment.
  • Create and maintain accurate documentation of configurations, wiring, and procedures.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and testing to ensure smooth operation of equipment.
  • Lift and carry equipment weighing 40 pounds.
  • Climb, reach, bend, and kneel to install and maintain equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Bachelor’s degree.
  2. At least 5 years of experience in a computerized broadcast environment.
  3. A track record of success and growth in operation and administration of radio automation.
  4. Proven ability to properly install and use broadcast/recording and test equipment.
  5. Effective organizational and communication skills.
  6. Ability to work productively and successfully with diverse, multicultural people and groups.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Public radio engineering or operations experience.
  • Experience with the Broadcast Electronics’ AudioVault system.
  • Society of Broadcast Engineers professional certification, especially CBNT level.
  • Personal means of transportation to conduct site visits, as necessary.
SALARY: The salary for this position spans two ranges ($35,358 – 60,789). Actual pay will be dependent upon skills and experience. We expect to offer in the high 40s to low 50s. UW-Extension offers a comprehensive benefits package.
