2/23/2013 (Red Onion Greens with Turkey Bacon)

SEGMENT #1

#1 Springfield, MO        Anxiety Adrenaline
Z recommends the Rx Diamox (but warns it can affect your taste buds) for bpeople interested in amedicinal remedy. He recommends (if possible) staying over in Denver or Idaho springs - a location with a higher altitude - in order to acclimate to the elevation difference. He also recommends limited activity for 24 hours and prioritizes hydration!

Topic                              Childless Couples Eat Healthier
Z and T discuss a UK study that found that Childless couples eat 4.4 pounds more (per two weeks) of vegetables and fruit.  It’s surprising that children are controlling the family diet.  Z finds it ironic that parents – who are supposed to be espousing the value of fruits and vegetables – are eating far less of them.

#2 OK City, OK              Dehydration Issues
Z believes the issue may be hydration in her environment.  He suggests an ultrasonic humidifier for her bedroom because we’re in our beds sleeping for 6 – 8 hours of each day.  He also reminds us that there is no magic number for the amount of water per day.  He says the best indicator is your urine color – darker means dehydration and lighter means good hydration.  He suggest Liquid Tear eye drops for the dry eye side effects of dehydration.

#3 Jacksonville, FL       Friend with too many viral infections
Z explains that Pneumonia is a serious disease – a leading cause of death throughout the life span – so it can be quite common to have a long recovery.  Z goes on to explain that the mono test is strange in the sense that once you have it, the test will register positive.  So, you could’ve had it years ago, feel sick now, and test positive for it, but not necessarily have it.  The blood test for Mono (or Epstein Bar) only signifies that there are antibodies for Mono or EB in the bloodstream.  It doesn’t offer any more information than that.  Z recommends anti-depressants, which have proven beneficial for folks with this type of issue.

E-mail                             HCG Diet (Judge Zorba)
T reads the case from Michelle in Chesterfield, MO.  Her fiancé really wants to go on the HCg diet and Michelle cites the FDA’s lack of approval.  Z explains that all obesity drugs failed due to serious side effects.  Z says that the HCg diet has no scientific evidence.

SEGMENT  #2

RECIPE: Red Onion Greens with Turkey Bacon

#4 Oliver Springs, TN    English Muffins are NOT English!
Z explains that in Indian medicine, Tumeric is a common, traditional remedy for pain, etc. He says that if it works, continue it.

E-mail                             Oven Thermometer (Disagreeing with the Doc)
T reads a dissenting e mail from a listener named Bradford who takes issue with Z’s advice to purchase a separate oven thermometer claiming that newer ovens have better settings.  Z agrees to disagree citing sources from Cooks Illustrated saying otherwise and that he’ll follow their advice.

SEGMENT #3

TOPIC:                           Autism Study on Vaccine Link a FRAUD!
Z and T discuss a recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine which  revealed that a portion of the baby boomer generation, specifically the 78 million Americans who were born in the post-war baby boom from 1946 to 1964, were less healthy than most of their parents. Z talks about how exercise and healthy living are important in order to avoid this fate.

#5 El Paso, TX               Male Menopause
Z explains that testosterone does decrease in men over the years.  So the pharmaceutical industry has now created topical ointments to increase testosterone.  The scientific community admits to the drop off, but shows no evidence of increased testosterone levels leading to increased energy levels, sex drive, etc.  For lack of energy, Z recommends an appropriate amount of sleep per day.

Mythbuster:                   Honey for Coughing
T reads a myth about a common home remedy for sore throats and coughs: honey.  Z says this is true.  He offers the caveat that it should not be offered to children (infants) under the age of 1 due to infantile botulism.  But there have been studies that support honey’s success over cough syrups.

#6 Bozeman, MT           Question on Thyroid Biopsy
Z recommends that she get her thyroid biopsied.  He explains that thyroid cancer is common and curable and early detection is key.  He admits that certain cancers (ovarian being one) can be spread by the blood stream and nest in other areas of the body.  Some (like prostate cancer) do not spread.]

E-mail                             Regis and Zorba?
T reads a note from Darwin in MKE who explains that when he doubles the speed on his podcasts, Tom sounds just like Regis Philbin.  TC quips that, first he sounded like Adam West and now he sounds like Regis!
