Z informs the caller that she's over-hydrating due to her breastfeeding duties. He recommends that she - even as hard as it may seem while nursing - to reduce her water intake.

Z suggests only taking supplements that have been tested and reviwed. He trusts Consumer Reports and Consumer Labs.org. The may clinic has a book that can be helpful.Z says with child birth, it's always a good idea to have standard medical as a back-up.
Topic Birds and Bees for Grandparents
Z and T discuss the growing trend of AIDS and STD in aging folks from Florida. Z explains how some elderly men have several sexual partners, many times not practicing safe sex. Z says that a new effort is underway to discuss safe sex with grandparents, often grandfathers because of their proclivity to be the only "rooster in the hen house" at certain retirement communities. He cites how the biggest increase in AIDS cases in Florida came in the 50+ age group.

Z explains that Clindamycin is a good antibiotic, but it can decrease the "good" bacteria in the body. This can allow for a C Diff infection, requiring an additional or alternate antibiotic, Fragile, coupled with a pro-biotic to repopulate the good bacteria in the body. Z says to go to COnumer Reports to find a trusted probiotic.
E-mail Poodled
T reads an e-mail Mary whose grandson is allergic to dogs. She's looked into getting a poodle because they don't affect allergies. Z says that they don't affect MOST allergy sufferers. Z disclaims that he's a standard poodle owner. TC quizzes Z on Marilyn Monroe's poodle name: Mafia.

#4 Wichita, KS "Ashcakes"
The caller is preparing a dinner roll-like meal over an open fire during her retirement to remote living. She'd like to know if her "ashcakes" are healthy for her to eat. Z says the issue to consider is the particulate matter breathed in from the cook fire (which can be similar to smoking).
E-mail Homonyms (Grammar Police)
T reads an e-mail from Jim in Belmont, WI who corrects Z on the Google/Googol homonym statement. Jim says they are homophones - words that have the same pronunciation but different spelling.

TOPIC: The "Nocebo Effect"
Z and T discuss a Lancet study that explored - what is being dubbed - the "Nocebo effect" which is where folks learn of potential side effects of treatments or drugs and psych themselves into getting them. The study looked at side effects from cancer treatments: nausea, aches, pains, etc. When participants were told that, while uncomfortable, there would be side effects they were more likely to experience them. Those who had a conversation focusing on other facets outside of the side effects were not. Z says there still needs to be full disclosure of side effects, but doctors need to frame the conversation better and give the infrmation in an appropriate way.

Z empathizes with the caller as there's no diagnosis for her. He believes she had an infectious process going on with an unknown origin. She may have built up antibodies and it won't return, but he recommends getting another Lyme's Disease test down the line.
Mythbuster: Rock Ear
T reads a myth about musicians having worse hearing or more rapidly deteriorating hearing than non-musicians. Z says this is true and recommends ALL folks in the music industry (even classical musicians) wear ear plugs at all times.

Z recommends a netti-pot to the caller for relief as all allergy tests have yielded no causal information. If the NP fails, Z recommends an Rx steroid, nasal spray.
