An American student in Egypt used Twitter to send a single-word message, "arrested," through his cell phone. He was rescued. A hate message circling in a social network in Sydney led to a 2-day riot against the city’s Lebanese community. What are the promises and perils of Twitter, Facebook, and other social networking media?
