The Fate of The Bagdad Zoo

MARCH 19, 2007 MONDAY AT 3PM CT

When the Iraq war began, the Baghdad Zoo was caught in the war's crossfire. This hour on Here on Earth, Radio Without Borders, Jean Feraca's guest tells us an uplifting story of Iraqis and non-Iraqis working together to save innocent animals.

Guest
  • Lawrence Anthony, conservationist and founder of the Earth Organization, author of "Babylon's Ark" (St. Martin's Press). He received the UN's Earth Day award (making him the first South African to receive the award) for his work in Baghdad.

  • Paul 3/19/07: "The devastating impact of the Iraq war on the Baghdad Zoo is one of a thousand examples of the indirect costs of war that are never tallied in monetary-based estimates. I appreciate that your guest has been able to make some lemonade out of the lemons of war. But more importantly, I appreciate that your guest and your program increase our awareness of the peripheral consequences of war. I think we are incapable of understanding the many aspects, and the true cost."
