BOOTS ON THE GROUND
By August 31, 2010, our combat mission in Iraq will end.
In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, we ask a blunt question:
Did we win? We're not the only ones asking. The phrase "did we win
the war in Iraq" has been searched over 7 million times on Google.
The war has cost an estimated 860 billion dollars. Well over 4000 American
service members have lost their lives, as have some 100,000 Iraqis. So,
was it worth it? Did we win?
SEGMENT 1:
Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez served as
Commander of Coalition Forces in Iraq from June 2003 to June 2004. His
new memoir, "Wiser in Battle," is a scathing critique of the
Bush administration's planning and execution of the war in Iraq. He
joins Steve Paulson for a candid discussion of his book and the history
it covers.
SEGMENT 2:
We hear excerpts from the play "The Lonely Soldier
Monologues," performed by actress Cara Liander. The play
was written by Helen Benedict based on interviews collected for
her book "The Lonely Soldier: The Private War of Women Serving
in Iraq." Benedict talks with Anne Strainchamps about the sexual
harassment and sexual abuse endured by female soldiers in Iraq which
often begins before they leave the United States.
SEGMENT 3:
Donovan Campbell writes about his experiences
in one of Iraq's worst hot spots Ramadi in the Spring of 2004
in his memoir, "Joker One." He tells Steve Paulson
about one particularly bad night, a night that started out like so many
others. And Jim Fleming adds a comment, followed by a reading
from Robert Fagles' translation of the opening to Homer's Iliad.
