LEADERSHIP IN WAR

Program 07-07-01-A

Listen!

*When do we most need our leaders? In times of crisis? In times of war? In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge Winston Churchill's biographer Martin Gilbert explains how the man who offered his nation only blood, sweat, toil and tears made it believe that was enough. And he says Churchill's approach to all-party government could solve America's problems in Iraq.

SEGMENT 1:

Deborah Scranton, director of "The War Tapes," tells Jim Fleming that she got volunteers from the New Hampshire National Guard to record their experiences in combat in Iraq for one year. She then turned their video into an award-winning film. Scranton says her goal is to bridge the disconnect between ordinary Americans and the soldiers who are enduring combat on our behalf. And we hear clips from "The War Tapes." Also, Martin Gilbert is Winston's Churchill's biographer. His latest published volume of "Churchill: A Life" is "Churchill and America." Gilbert tells Steve Paulson what made Churchill such a great leader during WWII and we hear historic recordings of some of Churchill's most memorable speeches.

SEGMENT 2:

James Bradley told the story of his father raising the flag on Iwo Jima in his book "Flags of Our Fathers." In "Flyboys" he tells what happened on the next island over, where eight American airmen were captured and beheaded. Bradley's conversation with Jim Fleming revolves around the moral and ethical considerations facing the government in such situations. How much information do you release and when? Also, Shakespeare expert Stephen Greenblatt tells Steve Paulson about shaking Bill Clinton's hand and learning he could still recite sections of "Macbeth," and says Shakespeare believed all rulers suffered from insomnia. And Kenneth Branagh fires us up to face the French.

SEGMENT 3:

Wisconsin Public Television producer Patty Loew talks with Anne Strainchamps about her TV documentary "Way of the Warrior," which deals with the experience of Native American veterans of America's wars from WWI to the present day. Patty talks about her grandfather's diary account of WWI, tells the incredible WWII story of a Crow soldier who became his tribe's war chief, and says what Native America has to teach mainstream America is how to re-integrate warriors into society after combat. And we hear excerpts from the program, which will air nationally around Veteran's Day.
