SEX, LOVE AND AUDIOTAPE

Program 06-02-12-B Listen!

"Story of O" scandalized a nation. And a nation not easily scandalized - France! The anonymous tale of complete submission was called vulgar by some, brilliant by others. In any case, what kind of person could write such a book? In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, we'll find out the surprising secret behind the erotic masterpiece, "Story of O." Also, the sensual history of the tango. And Casanova's first love.

SEGMENT 1:

Louise Brown, author of "The Dancing Girls of Lahore," tells Anne Strainchamps that the traditional culture of prostitution is related to the performing arts in Pakistan but that it is being replaced by a sex industry that values youth, beauty, consumerism and status.

SEGMENT 2:

Robert Ferris Thompson is the author of "Tango: The Art History of Love." He muses about the movements of the dance and all the passions they express. And we hear Tango music throughout his meditation. Al;so, Paul Feig is the author of "Superstud: Or How I Became a 24-Year-Old Virgin." He chats with Doug Gordon about creating a memoir of his awkward attempts to explore his sexuality as a teenager.

SEGMENT 3:

Dutch novelist Arthur Japin has written "In Lucia's Eyes" which tells the imagined story of Casanova's first love and what became of her. Japin talks with Jim Fleming about the historical Lucia and Casanova, and why he wanted to write about one of Casanova's women. Also, film-maker Pola Rapaport talks with Steve Paulson about "Story of O." Rapaport has made a film about the classic erotic novel and its famously secretive author.
