INDIA MODERN
To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio
Bombay is the largest city in the world. And one of
the most confounding. Bar dancers, gangs, and Bollywood all call
Bombay home, for better or worse. In this hour of To the Best
of Our Knowledge, a Bombay-native takes us inside this Maximum
City. Also, the writer of the hit movie "Monsoon Wedding"
tell us what it's like to be Indian in America. And, bestselling
author Vikram Seth traces his family roots from India to England.
SEGMENT 1:
Sabrina Dhawan wrote the screenplay for the
hit movie "Monsoon Wedding." She tells Steve Paulson
that the Bollywood film industry is more productive than its California
counterpart and describes a typical Bollywood romance. And we
hear clips.
SEGMENT 2:
Writer Suketu Mehta is the author of "Maximum
City: Bombay Lost and Found." He tells Jim Fleming about
the city's archaic rent laws, the gang violence of the 90s
and the sectarian riots and their aftermath. Also, Clyde Prestowitz
tells Jim Fleming that India has an educated, skilled work force
and can do business in English, so it's cashing in thanks to an
internet-based economy. Prestowitz is the author of "Three
Billion New Capitalists."
SEGMENT 3:
Bob Spitz is the author of "The Beatles:
The Biography." He tells Anne Strainchamps why John, Paul
George and Ringo joined the Maharishi in Rishikesh, India. He
says it was a vacation for some of them; they wrote the White
Album while they were there; Ringo hated the food; and a sex scandal
eventually sent them all packing. And we hear lots of music.
