CALENDAR

Program 06-01-01-B Listen!

It's time to wish you a Happy 2006 – if you use the Gregorian Calendar. And a Happy 1427 by the Islamic calendar, or a Fruitful 4704 in China, where it's the Year of the Dog. But then, if you accept the Big Bang Theory, let us wish you a Happy 13 Billion, 700 Million. However you calculate it, in this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, we're talking about time.

SEGMENT 1:

Brian Swimme is a mathematical cosmologist. He tells Steve Paulson that the invention of mechanical clocks created a kind of artificial time which permits greater efficiency, but cuts human beings off from the rest of nature. Also, Chris Hardman runs the Antenna Theater in San Francisco. He created a piece where he gave audience members headphones and told them to go for a walk on the beach. TTBOOK Technical Director Caryl Owen produced this report about what happened.

SEGMENT 2:

British artist Laura Williams talks with Anne Strainchamps about Aluna - her design for the world's first tidal-powered moon clock. When it's built, it'll be larger than Stonehenge, and intended to link humans to the planet and the cosmos. And, storyteller Carolyn McVickar Edwards has a lovely little collection called "In the Light on the Moon." She tells us "The Hare's Gift."

SEGMENT 3:

Chris Hardman (see segment 1) decided to redesign the calendar, representing time and the seasons the way we experience them in the natural world. He tells Anne Strainchamps about his Eco-Logical calendar, which unrolls like a scroll, and what he hopes to accomplish with it. Russell Foster tells Jim Fleming how the body uses light to tell time; why night shift workers have more accidents; and why it can matter when you take your medicine. Foster is a neuro-scientist whose latest book is called "Rhythms of Life."
