CREATIVITY

Program 05-12-04-B Listen!

Film-maker David Lynch has been "diving within" through the Transcendental Meditation technique for more than 30 years. Now Lynch has created a foundation that wants to help students discover their full creative potential through T.M. In this hour of the Peabody Award-winning program To the Best of Our Knowledge, David Lynch talks about the power of T.M.

SEGMENT 1:

Composer and scholar Gunther Schuller talks with Steve Paulson about creativity and gives examples from both classical music and jazz. Schuller won the Pulitzer Prize for his compositions in 1994 and just turned 80. And we hear lots of musical examples.

SEGMENT 2:

John Geiger is the author of "Nothing is True Everything is Permitted: The Life of Brion Gysin." He tells Anne Strainchamps about the man he thinks is the most influential 20th century artist you've never heard of, and how he inspired everyone from William S. Burroughs to David Bowie. Also, Roald Hoffman won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, but he's also a poet. He tells Jim Fleming he thinks the two disciplines have a lot in common, and reads a couple of poems.

SEGMENT 3:

Film-maker David Lynch is a long–time practitioner of Transcendental Meditation. He talks with Doug Gordon about how TM has influenced his creativity, and his films, which include "Mulholland Drive," and "Blue Velvet" and the TV series "Twin Peaks."
