The Seven Deadly Sins

Program 02-03-24-B

To The Best of Our Knowledge

from Wisconsin Public Radio

Listen to it!

According to George Bernard Shaw, the seven deadly sins are food, clothing, firing, rent, taxes, respectability and children. Next time on To the Best of Our Knowledge, we'll explore the more traditional Seven Deadly Sins. Musician Joe Jackson will tell us how lust, gluttony and the other sins inspired his album Heaven and Hell. And we'll experience the Angry comedy of Lewis Black.

SEGMENT 1:
Musician Joe Jackson talks with Jim Fleming about his concept album "Heaven and Hell" which is based on the Seven Deadly Sins. He says we all have the potential for committing all the sins, and explains how hee captured the spirit of each one in music. And we hear lots of examples. And some comedy from The Onion Radio News.
SEGMENT 2:
John Portmann contributed to and edited the collection of essays, "In Defense of Sin." He tells Steve Paulson why, as a child, he loved going to confession. He explains why despair is the worst sin of all, and says that some modern writers talk about sin without any reference to God. Also, comedian Lewis Black is an angry man. He writes for "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and performs stand up. He talks with Jim Fleming about the fine line between playing angry and being angry, and we hear excerpts from an on–stage performance in Madison, Wisconsin.
SEGMENT 3:
Food historian Stewart Lee Allen is the author of "In the Devil's Garden: A Sinful History of Forbidden Food." He tells Anne Strainchamps why the ancient Greeks wouldn't eat beans, how Spanish Christians began the tradition of eating ham for Easter, and what he'd serve at a dinner dedicated to the Seven Deadly Sins. And more comedy from The Onion Radio News.
