$1 Million for Stroke Care/Research

By

Wisconsin is one of 11 states receiving $1 million over the next three years to improve stroke care. Twenty hospitals across the state will receive funding to provide training for emergency medical service personnel, doctors and nurses and to collect data about stroke patients and their care.

Wisconsin American Heart Association representative Katie Watkins says the funding comes at a good time as more and more people are at risk of having a stroke. “Stroke is not just for the elderly populations anymore. It’s really starting to affect the younger age categories as we see those risk factors that are, um, not only for stroke but for heart disease as well on the rise.”

In Wisconsin, stroke is the third leading cause of death behind cancer and cardiovascular disease and costs the state about $427 million a year.
